A Day at The Races
Dating back before the Roman times, horse racing is one of the oldest and most established sports in the UK. Having produced some of the greatest jockeys of all time, Lester Piggott, Frankie Dettori and Sir Gordon Richards, Great Britain is renowned for being home to some of the world’s most famous racecourses.
Horse racing is certainly an event to pencil in your sporting and social calendars. There is something for everyone, with many offering exclusive Ladies Days and plenty of family-fun entertainment. Here are the major horse racing events this year and where they are.
When: 4-6th April 2019
The iconic Grand National is one of the most famous and highly anticipated horse races in the world. This three-day event is run at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool. Watched by over 500,000 people worldwide and attended by around 150,000 people including many famous faces and royalty, the Grand National is a spectacular event that has the whole nation gripped. The notorious Randox Health Grand National Steeplechase is the biggest race in the UK. As the horses and their jockeys run over 4 miles of racecourse, jumping 30 fences along the way, all to become the Grand National Champion and win the prize fund of £1 million.
2019 will see the return of last years’ winner Tiger Roll, but will he win the title again and become part of the exclusive club of back-to-back Grand National winners?

Royal Ascot is one of the most prestigious horse races in the country. It’s an event like no other, from picnics to private boxes, this five-day event will leave you feeling like royalty. Attracting many of the world’s finest racehorses, this event gives racehorses the chance to compete for millions of pounds in prize money. Royal Ascot sees many famous faces, with the arrival of the Royal Procession being one of the event highlights. With its spectacular heritage, high fashion, fine dining and pageantry, Royal Ascot makes for an unforgettable experience.
When: 31st May – 1st June 2019
The Investec Derby Festival is run at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey. This two-day event not only features the highly contested Style Awards but it’s home to the Greatest Flat Race in the World. The Investec Derby Festival really is a test of racehorse and wardrobe. To kick-start your summer, opening the festival on the Friday is Ladies Day with the chance to win some fantastic prizes both on and off the track.
When: 19th April 2019
The All-Weather Championships concludes with a spectacular finals race at Lingfield Park on Good Friday. With over £1 million on offer over six race categories, this event sees the biggest prize fund for an all-weather raceday ever in Europe, and is one of the richest days in the UK. There’s plenty of entertainment for the whole family, from free face painters and live music to inflatable derby hoppers and an Easter egg hunt.
When: 21-24th August 2019
This spectacular four-day festival takes place at York Racecourse in the middle of summer. The Ebor Festival has the oldest, richest, fastest and most famous races in horse racing. Opening the festival on day one is the Juddmonte International, the richest race of the season. Ladies Day takes place on day two of the event, with some fabulous prizes up for grabs and the highest rated mare and fillies race in Europe. The fastest race of the festival is run on day three, the Nunthorpe Sprint, the highest rated 1,000m sprint in the world. Nothing is more suited to mark the end of the Ebor Festival than the oldest race of the festival which has been raced since 1840, the Ebor race.

Set in the heart of the Sussex countryside is one of the most beautiful racecourses in the world, Goodwood. The Qatar Goodwood Festival, more commonly known as ‘Glorious Goodwood’, is an exciting five-day festival and is the highlight of the flat-racing season. From its spectacular opening ceremony to its unique fundraising ladies celebrity race, Glorious Goodwood is the perfect event for socialising and sporting. The event concludes with one of the most popular races in the world, the Qatar Stewards Cup which sees the finest sprinted dash towards the finishing line in an attempt to win this infamous title.
